Nationwide — Nelly is under fire after telling Ashanti on their reality show that he doesn’t plan to help with their baby. He openly said he won’t change diapers, sparking backlash from fans who say he’s leaving the parenting to Ashanti.
In Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together, the rapper reveals he’s heading out on a two-month tour. Ashanti, now caring for their 11-month-old son KK, shares that while she’s proud of Nelly’s success, she’s anxious about managing things alone.
During a restaurant scene, Ashanti mentions how hard it is with the baby when Nelly is away. Nelly responds bluntly, “It’s all you. I ain’t going to even lie. You know, I ain’t got nothing for him.” He recalls telling Ashanti that he expected her to handle most of the early childcare until their son could walk and talk, according to People.
Ashanti also calls him out for never waking up when the baby cries at night. Nelly claims he doesn’t hear it and calls that his “gift.” When Ashanti tells him it’s his turn to change a diaper, Nelly jokes, “Baby, I’ll give you the world. I just ain’t changing no diaper.”
The scene didn’t sit well with viewers. Many took to social media to criticize Nelly’s attitude. Some called him out for being selfish, while others sympathized with Ashanti. Comments like “Ashanti is a married single mom” and “Real men change diapers” flooded online threads.
The reaction has been largely in support of Ashanti, with fans expressing disappointment over Nelly’s unwillingness to share parenting responsibilities. The show is now streaming on Peacock.
