Nationwide — Rashonda Greene, a 45-year-old African American woman from Gastonia, North Carolina, was killed Monday night when a suspected drunk driver ran a red light and crashed into her car. The driver now faces multiple serious charges.
The crash happened just before 10 p.m. at the intersection of East Hudson Boulevard and Gaston Day School Road. Police say 21-year-old Logan Taylor was driving a Dodge Charger south on Armstrong Park Road without headlights. He reportedly ran a red light and slammed into a red Hyundai Elantra driven by Greene, who was heading east.
Rashonda died at the scene. Taylor and his 18-year-old brother, who was riding with him, sustained minor injuries.
Police said alcohol, high speed, and darkness were factors in the crash. Taylor has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, DUI, running a red light, and reckless driving.
“This tragic incident is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly lives can be lost when alcohol and reckless driving are involved,” Police Chief Trent Conrad said, according to WCNC. “Drinking and driving is not just illegal – it’s deadly. We urge everyone to think before they get behind the wheel impaired. One poor decision can destroy lives.”
