Singer Freddie Jackson

Nationwide — Legendary R&B singer Freddie Jackson, whose smooth, powerful voice helped define romantic soul music in the 1980s and early 1990s, has died at the age of 70. He passed away Monday night, October 5, 2026, just three days after his 70th birthday, according to a statement released by his family on Tuesday. According to TMZ, a cause of death has not been disclosed. His family described him as a “kind, generous soul” who loved his fans, family, friends, and music deeply, adding that the songs he created became part of countless love stories, celebrations, and cherished memories.

Born Frederick Anthony Jackson on October 2, 1956, in Harlem, New York, Jackson developed his vocal talents singing gospel at White Rock Baptist Church before making his way into New York’s R&B scene. He eventually performed with the funk group Mystic Merlin and worked as a background vocalist for singer Melba Moore before signing with Capitol Records and launching his solo career. His breakthrough came in 1985 with his debut album, Rock Me Tonight, which became a major commercial success and established him almost immediately as one of the premier male R&B vocalists of his generation. The album went platinum and earned Jackson two Grammy nominations.

His signature single, “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart, while the unforgettable ballad “You Are My Lady” also reached No. 1 on the R&B chart and climbed to No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his biggest pop crossover hit. His success continued with songs such as “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” “Jam Tonight,” “Love Me Down,” and “Do Me Again.” Altogether, he scored 10 No. 1 hits on Billboard’s R&B chart, becoming one of the dominant voices of the quiet-storm era. His follow-up album, Just Like the First Time, also achieved platinum status, confirming that his early success was far more than a one-album breakthrough.

Jackson continued recording and performing for decades after his commercial peak, releasing albums including Here It Is, Private Party, Life After 30, Transitions, For You and Love Signals. His later career demonstrated the longevity of both his voice and his audience, and in 2023 he released My First Love, nearly four decades after Rock Me Tonight first made him a star. One particularly notable moment in his career came in 1988 when he performed at the massive Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert at London’s Wembley Stadium, joining an international lineup of artists supporting the anti-apartheid movement. In September 2024, Jackson also publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease and partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness, although his family has not said whether the condition was related to his death.

He leaves behind a catalog that helped shape an era when sophisticated love songs and powerhouse vocal performances were at the center of contemporary R&B. Alongside singers such as Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass and Jeffrey Osborne, he became one of the voices generations of listeners associated with romance, slow dances and late-night R&B radio. His family thanked everyone who ever sang along, danced or connected emotionally with his performances and said details regarding funeral arrangements and ways to honor his legacy will be announced in the coming days. Although Freddie Jackson is gone, classics such as “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight” ensure that his unmistakable voice will remain part of R&B history for generations to come.
