Nationwide — Rep. Ilhan Omar has won reelection to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger John Nagel in the November 3, 2026, election. The Democratic incumbent secured another term despite facing continued criticism from President Donald Trump and other Republicans, along with renewed attention surrounding federal investigations.
Omar first entered Congress in 2019 after winning the 2018 election. Her latest victory will give her a fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, as reported by Fox 9. She made history during her first campaign as the first African refugee elected to Congress and the first woman of color to represent Minnesota in the House. Since then, she has become a prominent Democratic voice on immigration, foreign policy, and other national issues.
The 5th Congressional District covers several communities in the Minneapolis area. These include Minneapolis, Brooklyn Center, Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope, Richfield, Robbinsdale, St. Anthony, Columbia Heights, Fridley, Hilltop, and parts of Edina and Spring Lake Park. The district also includes Fort Snelling.
Her reelection campaign came amid repeated attacks from Trump and Republican lawmakers. Omar has frequently faced criticism from political opponents over her statements and policy positions. More recently, federal investigators drew attention to her after they raided her Washington, D.C., home on October 12. Department of Homeland Security officials said the search was connected to an ongoing criminal investigation involving fraud allegations.
Omar has not been charged with a crime, and authorities have not publicly presented evidence establishing that she committed any wrongdoing. The investigation also brought renewed attention to past allegations surrounding her personal life, particularly her 2009 marriage to a man whom some current and former officials suspected was her brother.
Officials reportedly found some evidence in 2016 suggesting the marriage may have been fraudulent. The allegations centered on claims that the marriage was arranged to help the man obtain a green card and secure legal immigration status in the United States. The claims have continued to draw political attention. Despite the ongoing controversy, voters in Minnesota’s 5th District have chosen to give her another term in Congress.
