Nationwide — Sean Greer, a white man from Wilton Manors, Florida, who was convicted in a deadly 2021 hit-and-run, has been sentenced to 73 years in prison. The case left three Black children dead and sparked emotional testimony from grieving families, including a mother who said she will never forgive him.
Greer was driving with a suspended license when he sped through a residential street in Wilton Manors. He swerved around a city bus, then jumped a curb and hit six children walking on the sidewalk. He left the scene without stopping or calling for help, according to the Sun Sentinel.
The crash killed Andrea Fleming, 6, and Kylie Jones, 5, at the scene. A third child, 9-year-old Laziyah Stukes, suffered severe brain injuries and remained in intensive care on a ventilator for months before dying on July 11, 2022. Three other children survived but were left with serious injuries, including head trauma and broken bones.
Authorities said Greer first denied involvement, telling police his car had been stolen and claiming he struck a pole instead. Prosecutors later said he pleaded no contest in February to 15 charges, including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
In court, Greer asked for leniency, saying he was trying to rebuild his life and was on probation for burglary at the time of the crash. He said he had been driving home from Walmart with groceries and insisted the incident was an accident.
“I want you to know I’m sorry,” Greer said. “I just want you all to have peace.”
His apology did little to ease the families’ grief. Andrea Fleming’s grandfather, Gregory Holcomb, told Greer, “I was going to forgive you, man, but I can’t. I can’t forgive after what you took from me.” Her mother, Tyricka Williams, said, “You killed those kids, my baby, and you left them in the street.”
The court also noted he previously received a 35-year sentence for violating probation in an earlier case. The new 73-year sentence will run at the same time as the existing term, keeping him in prison.
