Nationwide — Todric McGee, a 21-year-old African American college student and football player from Missouri, tragically passed away on April 19th after accidentally shooting himself at home. Police confirmed the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and ruled out any signs of depression or mental health issues.McGee, a starting safety for the Missouri State Bears, was a key player who had been with the team for four seasons. He earned all-conference honors in 2023 and was preparing for a fifth season, despite missing part of 2024 due to injury. Coaches and teammates described him as a committed athlete and a positive presence in the locker room.
Off the field, McGee was known for being family-oriented. In 2023, he launched a GoFundMe campaign to support his mother, who had suffered a brain aneurysm. His high school coach, Steve Martin, praised McGee for putting family first and credited his upbringing for his selfless character.
On April 21st, the Missouri State community gathered at Plaster Stadium to honor McGee’s life. Friends and family released balloons and shared memories. His sister, Tahlia Pope, said he had always been there for her. Teammate Zaire Adkins remembered McGee for his easygoing nature and bright smile.
While some questioned whether mental health played a role, McGee’s mother, Stephanie Pope, clarified that her son wasn’t struggling with depression or any issues that could have caused it. “It’s just a tragic accident, and I just want people to know that you know he’s a good kid,” she said, according to KYTV.
McGee was also set to graduate from Missouri State this year. The university is offering support to those affected and has asked for privacy for the family.
