Nationwide — Whoopi Goldberg sparked renewed controversy after her comments on The View appeared to urge viewers to support candidates who oppose President Trump. The remarks came while the daytime talk show remains under FCC scrutiny over its political coverage.
According to the Daily Mail, the conversation began when the panel discussed possible Democratic presidential candidates for 2028. Goldberg brushed aside the topic and said the focus should instead be on the 2026 midterm elections.
“I don’t care what happens in 2028 right now. I want this,” Goldberg said while pointing at the table. Co-host Sunny Hostin replied, “2026, November,” and Goldberg agreed. “Let us- I beg you all. I beg you all,” she said before adding that the country needed to “re-adjust what’s going on.”
Hostin responded, “Right the ship,” and Goldberg echoed the phrase. “Right now. We have to right the ship.” Sara Haines then joked, “Clean this ship up!” Goldberg went on to say the country’s current problems should be addressed before people begin debating the next presidential race.
Goldberg also argued that everyone should have an equal opportunity without being judged because of gender or other factors. She said many of the issues Americans had fought to overcome are still being debated today.
The comments came just months after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr opened an investigation into The View over its political content. The review is examining whether the program complies with the long-standing “Equal Time” rule, which generally requires broadcasters to provide equal opportunities to opposing political candidates under certain circumstances.
For decades, The View has qualified as a “bona fide” news program, making it eligible for exemptions added in the 1990s. Those exemptions allow news programs to invite guests based on their newsworthiness rather than providing equal political representation.
Carr, a Trump appointee, also ordered an early review of license renewals for eight ABC-owned stations in April after raising concerns about Disney’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The outcome of the Equal Time investigation could affect the exemption The View has relied on for years. ABC News has not publicly commented on the matter.
