Barbados Welcomes Back Sisters & Friends: A Powerful Fusion of Culture, Sisterhood, and Support

Sisters and Friends Getaway in Barbados

Nationwide — When Connie Portis, founder of Sisters & Friends, returned to host the 19th women’s getaway—and the second on the island of Barbados—it began with a resounding affirmation of the group’s impact. The Honorable Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados and a globally respected leader, extended a personal message of welcome and gratitude to the women traveling from across the United States. In her note, Prime Minister Mottley praised the group’s return as “a valued partnership,” emphasizing that by choosing Barbados, the women were “directly supporting the livelihoods of many, strengthening communities, and reinforcing the deep cultural and economic ties between Barbados and the United States.”

Over the five-day getaway, more than 80 guests generated an estimated $175,000 in spending through resort accommodations and local experiences. Furthering their commitment to community, the group also donated dry goods to two local charities, demonstrating the spirit of giving and solidarity that is at the heart of Sisters & Friends.

Thanks to the support of Visit Barbados, the visitor services arm of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., the Chief Product Development Officer, Marsha Alleyne, planned a wonderful experience for attendees that left a profound connection to the island, one that honors and preserves its deep African roots.

During an unforgettable historical tour, participants learned that Barbados, just 3,000 miles from the African continent, was a key port in the transatlantic trade of captured Africans. The tour included a visit to the powerful Builders Wall in Freedom Park, Bridgetown, where bricks etched with surnames memorialize those who were renamed and dispersed, many to North Carolina, during that painful chapter in history. Many of the ‘sisterfriends’ located their family names, making the bittersweet link between Barbados and their own American family.

Sisters & Friends is a non-membership community that gathers both online and in person to build connections among women of all ages and backgrounds. “We have a great time meeting women from around the United States for a wonderful mix of relaxing, rejuvenating, and learning our history,” says Portis. “Some attend with friends, others come alone—we may arrive as strangers, we always leave as friends.”

The stress-free, all-inclusive resort experience provided the perfect backdrop for bonding and discovery. A special highlight was a Bajan Buffet hosted by a local restaurant, showcasing the richness of Barbadian cuisine and culture. With hospitality as the island’s leading industry, followed by international finance, the warm welcome left a lasting impression.

“I am extremely grateful that our financial impact makes, in some modest way, a difference,” said Portis. “Plans for 2026 include deepening our cultural exchange and celebrating the 20th anniversary of Sisters & Friends with even more impact. Our goal is to host 80 women again and continue building bonds with the women of Barbados while showing sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Mottley for her gracious hospitality and support of Sisters and Friends.” To join the group, call (412) 400-8809.
