Nationwide — Beverly Sasberry, a 64-year-old woman accused of driving over 11 ducklings in Florida, now faces multiple animal cruelty charges. She pleaded not guilty in court while prosecutors pursue a sentence of up to 55 years in prison.
According to Atlanta Black Star, Sasberry is charged with 11 counts of aggravated animal cruelty, along with reckless driving, linked to the April 25 incident in Jacksonville, Florida. Each count relates to one of the ducklings killed during the event.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the case started after a couple reported seeing a red Honda Accord drive through a group of baby ducklings. Deputies responded after receiving multiple calls about the incident at the location.
Investigators said the couple later confronted Sasberry about what they had seen. During that exchange, she allegedly admitted she ran over the ducklings because they were making a mess in her yard.
Authorities also stated that Sasberry turned her car around and drove over the animals more than once. Deputies confirmed she was the registered owner of the red Honda Accord identified at the scene.
In court, prosecutors said no plea deal was offered. Sasberry entered a not guilty plea to all charges during her appearance.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it is also reviewing the case. Officials added that residents at the scene asked her to stop, but the actions reportedly continued.
If convicted, Sasberry could face up to 55 years in prison. She would also be added to Florida’s animal cruelty registry. Her pre-trial hearing is set for June 25.
