Founder of Black-Owned Nairobi Harvest Coffee Launches Plastic-Free K-Cups and Expands Its Kenya Education Program to 150 Children

Less than two years after its launch, the organic Kenyan coffee brand adds biodegradable single-serve pods, school supplies for 150 students, a new church floor, community meals, and agribusiness training for kids in the municipality of Kisii.

David Jones, Founder and CEo of Nairobi Harvest Coffee

Nationwide — Nairobi Harvest Coffee, the Black-owned social impact brand founded by David Jones, has launched its first K-Cups and expanded its community work in Kisii, Kenya. The new pods come in medium and dark roast, contain no plastic, and are fully biodegradable. The brand now provides school supplies to 150 children, while continuing to pay school fees for 22 students. The work is funded by the coffee itself: Nairobi Harvest continues to donate 25 percent of its profits back to the Kisii community.

Nairobi Harvest’s new K-Cups bring the brand’s 100% organic Arabica Kenyan coffee to single-serve brewers. They are available in medium roast and dark roast. Unlike conventional pods, they contain no plastic and are fully biodegradable, so the convenience of a single cup does not end up in a landfill for decades. The K-Cups are now officially a part of the brand’s whole bean and ground coffees.

When Nairobi Harvest launched, it committed to supporting education in Kisii, Kenya. Today, the brand continues to pay school fees for 22 children. It has also expanded the program so that 150 children now receive school supplies. The brand was inspired by a small church in Kisii, and that partnership has grown. Nairobi Harvest helped the church build a concrete floor for its building. It has also helped feed people in the surrounding community.

Nairobi Harvest is now teaching children in the program about agribusiness. Students learn how coffee is grown and how they can grow and sell it themselves. The goal is to pair today’s support with skills that can earn an income for years to come. “When we launched, we promised that every cup would do some good in Kisii,” says Jones. “Our customers have made that real. Children are in school, a church has a floor to stand on, families have been fed, and young people are learning that the coffee growing around them can be their future.”
