Denver Urban Spectrum Presents “Colorful Stories” Luncheon Celebrating Women’s Stories of Resilience and Success

Denver Urban Spectrum women honored

NationwideDenver Urban Spectrum will present “Colorful Stories… See Me, Hear Me,” a powerful luncheon experience honoring women of extraordinary resilience on May 30, at the Noor Event Center in Aurora. For nearly four decades, Denver Urban Spectrum has served as the voice of Colorado’s communities of color, shining a spotlight on underrepresented stories and transformative leadership. The Colorful Stories luncheon will continue this mission by showcasing stories of tribulation, courage, and triumph from four incredible women who have overcome profound personal adversity to become community pillars.

Colorful Stories Honorees:

• Janet Buckner, former Colorado legislator, who turned grief into purpose following the death of her husband.

• Rose Andom, namesake of the Rose Andom Center, and a beacon for domestic violence survivors.

• Elycia Cook, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Colorado, who transformed her sexual abuse trauma into a life of advocacy and mentorship.

• Stephanie McCoy-Johnson, a licensed substance abuse counselor using her lived experience to help others recover.

The Colorful Stories luncheon will also feature a special presentation on elder abuse, a pressing issue impacting millions of seniors annually. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ruth Boyd Elder Abuse Foundation, founded in memory of Rosalind “Bee” Harris’ late mother. This nonprofit works to combat elder abuse through advocacy, education, and essential support services across Colorado.

“These stories are inspirational,” says Harris, Publisher of Denver Urban Spectrum. “We are showcasing them to illuminate the path to healing, raise awareness, and mobilize communities to protect the most vulnerable among us.”

A panel of community experts will be joined by emcee Simone D. Ross, CEO of the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce, panel moderator Dr. Carolyn Love, founder of Kebaya Coaching & Consulting, and honorary chairs, business owners and philanthropists Geta and Janice Asfaw.

Organizers are currently seeking sponsorships for this inspiring event, which aims to amplify voices, uplift women, and create a lasting impact through their powerful stories—all while furthering the mission of the Ruth Boyd Elder Abuse Foundation.
