Nationwide — University Technical College (UTC) student Kande Sill, who writes under the pseudonym Kande S. Summers, a gifted 16-year-old student, has been awarded the highly competitive Arkwright Engineering Scholarship. The scholarship, recognized as one of the most distinguished accolades for young engineering talent in the UK, was awarded to Kande for her outstanding prototype project titled: “Enhancing Medical Delivery,” a pioneering solution exploring drone-based medical logistics with a focus on creating a secure, insulated packaging system for critical medical supplies. The design prioritizes security, insulation, and safe methods for dropping the payload. Her innovation aims to improve emergency healthcare access, particularly in hard-to-reach or underserved regions of the world.
Kande shared her journey on The Perfect Balance Trod Class Podcast, where she detailed the challenges and determination that led to her success. She emphasized the invaluable support of her mentor, Vern Brown, who guided her throughout the process. Her mentor commented: “Kande brings a rare mix of creativity, technical knowledge, and compassion. She’s not just an engineer in the making; she’s already leading by example.”
With a deep passion for problem-solving and creative design, Kande seamlessly integrates her love for art and engineering, proving that technical excellence and artistic vision can work hand in hand. She is committed to pioneering new advancements in engineering while inspiring more young women to enter the field and challenge traditional industry norms.
Kande shared insights into her journey as an Arkwright Engineering Scholar, where she discussed her passion for design and problem-solving, as well as the impact of the scholarship on her future ambitions. She emphasized the importance of bridging creativity with engineering, proving that innovation thrives at the intersection of art and science.
Beyond engineering, Kande has made a name for herself in the literary world, having authored three books:
Going Home: Diary of a Teenage Alien – Her debut novel, marking the start of her journey as a young writer.
Nala’s Story – A powerful exploration of gender equality in sports, inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
The Lost Destiny – A thrilling fantasy adventure about a young girl discovering her hidden powers.
She was also a featured Youth Author at the Emirates Literature Festival, where she engaged with young readers and aspiring writers, sharing her journey as a young creative. She also represented Jamaica at Expo 2020 Dubai, participated in the United Nations Model Conference in Abu Dhabi. She was also a multiple-time Black Excellence Youth Award winner in Dubai.
As a Youth Ambassador for the ‘Look Like Me Book Challenge in London, UK, Kande contributed to Raised Voices, an anthology that shows young writers tackling social issues. Funded by BBC Children in Need’s ‘We Move Fund’, the initiative provided young people with a platform for storytelling, peer mentorship, and public speaking.
Kande was also featured in Clear Channel’s national advertising campaign, which brought attention to the lack of diversity in children’s literature. While 34.5% of UK schoolchildren come from multicultural backgrounds, only 10% of children’s books feature diverse protagonists. Through nationwide digital advertising space, the campaign aimed to reshape the publishing industry and give young voices a platform.
Kande is redefining the possibilities for young women in engineering, art, and literature. Whether she’s developing innovative designs, crafting impactful stories, or advocating for greater representation, she continues to make a lasting impact across multiple industries. As an Arkwright Scholar and youth, her journey proves that passion, talent, and determination can shape the future.
