Nationwide — In 2017, the NFL held a national and international search with a $1 million funding grant program through Duke University for companies, industries, and independent inventors to submit their Ideas to the HHTC, Head Health Tech Challenge, to focus on the necessity of developing a more protective helmet to address the concussions players were encountering on the football field.
Inventor Terry Lewis, an ex-football player from Jacksonville, Florida, decided to submit his idea to the NFL program through Duke University. He felt that he was ahead of everybody when it came to protection to reduce concussions with The Boss Helmet design, because he had already applied for a patent, and he already had a company in California to conduct a partial simulation analysis (FEA) on it. Therefore, he thought all he had to do was to complete the application, and they would award him some funding to further help develop his helmet design.
After all was said and done by the Duke University selection process, he was not one of the applicants selected to receive any funding. However, he did receive a promising letter from Duke University and the NFL informing him that his partial test results were far superior to the competition and that they recommended that he conduct a full helmet (FEA) simulation analysis on the Boss Helmet and submit the results.
At the time, Terry did not have the finances to pay for a full test, but he used that letter as motivation to keep developing his helmet design and resubmitted it to the NFL, even though the funding program was over. He has continued to research and develop the Boss Helmet, knowing that God had given him the creative ability to finish what he started in designing and testing his helmet, and even more importantly, as an ex-football player, he wants to give back in some way to the game he loves so much.
In 2019, while searching the internet, he came across an article that said the NFL was going to have a symposium to discuss how to reduce the concussion rate. He immediately got excited and nervous at the same time because he knew he was rejected from the last opportunity given by the NFL, but he applied anyway. Out of seven thousand (7,000) applicants, they only chose three hundred (300) scientists, engineers, and inventors.
Terry was selected as one of the inventors to be a part of that discussion in Youngstown, Ohio, and as a result of those discussions, he was pleasantly surprised that the NFL included him and The Boss Helmet on their website from the symposium. He has used that website plug for more motivation to finish developing his helmet design. He has had a full simulation analysis completed on The Boss Helmet, and he has proudly sent the results to the NFL. He is now getting ready to go into manufacturing.
