Nationwide — Marcia Paige, the author of ABC Explorers: The Journey Begins with Letters and Pride, published by Line Queen Publishing, is celebrating that her new book for children of color continues to find its way to school classrooms and daycare centers across the country. The latest educator to embrace the book is Terri Washington, a Kindergarten teacher in Columbia, South Carolina, who is now using it as an educational tool to engage and empower her students.
The placement came together through an unexpected community thread. A soldier purchased copies of the book and donated them to the classroom of educator Terri Washington, whose principal approved its use as part of a full curriculum day for her class of 25 students. To deepen the experience, Line Queen Publishing donated paper crowns and Crayola Colors of the World crayons to each student — a touch designed to mirror the book’s central message: that every child deserves to see themselves reflected in their learning.
“The kids loved it,” Washington shared. “Especially getting the crowns.”
ABC Explorers is an alphabet activity book featuring letter tracing, coloring, and Black children sprinkled throughout the letters as the central characters — a design choice rooted in Paige’s belief that representation in early childhood education shouldn’t be an exception. The book is the first in what is now a growing collection. The second installment, focused on numbers and the way young learners encounter them in everyday life, is slated for release this summer.
For Paige, the South Carolina placement marks more than a milestone — it’s a model. “This is exactly why I built Line Queen Publishing,” Paige said. “Not just to publish books, but to make sure these books actually land in the hands of the children who need them most.”
