Nationwide — Purcell Bailey, an African American army veteran who served during WWII, recently turned 106 years old. Family and friends in Surry County, Virginia, honored his life of service, history, and resilience with a heartfelt gathering.

Before his time in the military, Bailey worked with the Williamsburg Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and 40s, according to WTSP. The program, created under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, provided jobs to young men during the Great Depression.
