Nationwide — Ajiah Gee, a 25-year-old African American inmate at Walton County Jail in Defuniak Springs, Florida, has made history as the first woman to graduate from the jail’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program. She earned a Class A CDL with no restrictions, along with multiple endorsements that open more career opportunities.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office announced her achievement, highlighting that Gee went beyond the standard training by securing both a double/triple trailer endorsement and a tanker endorsement, according to WLBT.
Earning a CDL in Florida requires more than classroom study. Inmates must pass written tests, demonstrate road skills, and prove they can safely operate heavy and complex vehicles. Officials noted that Gee met every requirement and exceeded expectations.
The sheriff’s office praised her persistence and discipline throughout the program, calling her accomplishment a reflection of the hard work it takes to succeed. Her success marks a milestone for the jail and shows the impact of rehabilitation programs behind bars.
The CDL program at Walton County Jail is funded entirely by inmate welfare dollars. It was designed to equip inmates with professional training and licenses that improve their chances of reintegration once released.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said, “Second chances matter. Every certificate, every license, and every step forward is a chance to choose a new path. Congratulations, Ajiah. Thank you for paving the way for others to follow.”
