Nationwide — Aliko Dangote, one of the wealthiest people in the world, plans to donate 33% of his fortune to charity after his death as part of his goal to create a lasting legacy. The billionaire said he wants his success to go beyond building wealth and focus on helping people and developing Africa.
Dangote built his empire through industries that produce everyday essentials, including cement, sugar, oil, fertilizer, and consumer goods. He started selling items as a child before growing his businesses and becoming Africa’s richest man and the world’s richest Black man in 2026.
Much of Dangote’s wealth comes from Dangote Cement, the company he founded and now chairs. The business has become Africa’s largest cement producer, with operations across multiple countries and an annual production capacity of millions of metric tons.
He later expanded his business empire through Dangote Industries Limited, entering industries such as oil and gas with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Dangote said he wanted to help Africa produce goods it once relied on imports for while strengthening the continent’s industries.
Forbes estimates Dangote’s net worth at about $30.9 billion, while Bloomberg places it around $35.1 billion. The billionaire said his fortune could increase further because many of his companies have yet to become publicly traded.
Despite his financial success, Dangote said he wants his legacy to be tied to industrializing Africa rather than just accumulating wealth. He pointed to the continent’s young population and future growth as reasons why he believes Africa has significant potential.
According to AfroTech, his plan to give away a third of his fortune could mean nearly $11.7 billion will go toward charitable efforts. His daughter, Halima Dangote, confirmed that the donation plan is included in his will and has the support of the family.
“Philanthropy needs to be in existence generation after generation,” Halima said, adding that giving back has always been an important part of their family’s mission. She said Dangote wants the donation to continue helping people for generations.
