Nationwide — A’nya Raymond, an African American mother from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was tragically shot and killed, leaving her 7-year-old autistic son alone on the streets. Police say the suspect is connected to two murders that happened just hours apart.
Kevin Griffin, 54, is charged in the deaths of A’nya, 31, and Terrance Wilder, 39. Authorities say the violence began inside a home near 12th Street and Capitol Drive, where Griffin allegedly tried to evict Wilder from an upstairs unit before shooting him.
A’nya and her nonverbal son were in the room during the first shooting. Investigators say Griffin then forced them into a car and drove off. During the ride, A’nya tried to fight back with a knife and mace, but prosecutors say Griffin shot her multiple times as her son sat beside her.
“I don’t think she knew the guy who killed her, but I do believe she knew the resident who lived above him,” A’nya’s mother, Misty Raymond, told WLBT.
Police believe Griffin dumped her body in an alley near 41st Street and Hampton Avenue. Her child was later found alone, shoeless, and with blood on his pants near 9th Street and Keefe Avenue.
Griffin reportedly confessed to the killings. Misty Raymond now mourns the daughter she lost and the milestones she will never see.
“She’ll never see her oldest daughter graduate college. She’ll never see her youngest son grow up and be able to speak his first words because he’s autistic,” Misty Raymond said. “I won’t be able to see my daughter grow old. I wasn’t supposed to bury her. She was supposed to bury me.”
Griffin remains in jail with a $500,000 bond.
