73-Year-Old Black Woman Who Survived Two Cancer Battles Gets Married For the First Time

Nationwide — Audrey Parker Green married her longtime partner, Allen Green, for the first time at 73 after a 20-year relationship marked by love, commitment, and surviving colon and breast cancer. Although she once dreamed of getting married and raising four children, she found that building a life with the right person mattered more than following a traditional timeline.

The couple’s story began in 1996 when Allen, a divorced former high school acquaintance, reached out to reconnect and asked her on a date. She turned him down, but they met again in November 1997 at a Scottville High School alumni event. This time, Allen made his intentions clear. “Ms. Parker, I’m not letting you get away from me this easy this time,” he told her. Their encounter eventually led to regular phone conversations, which developed into a friendship and later a romantic relationship. Meanwhile, she continued focusing on her career and family without rushing into marriage.

Their relationship faced its first major test in November 2002, when Green was diagnosed with colon cancer. According to People, she moved in with one of her sisters while dealing with the illness and treatment. Knowing the challenges that came with a serious diagnosis, she told Allen he could leave if he felt unable to handle the situation. He chose to stay and support her. She later acknowledged that illness could be difficult for both partners, particularly when one person was healthy and the other needed care. Allen’s decision to remain by her side became an important part of their relationship.

In October 2008, the couple faced another health crisis when she received a breast cancer diagnosis. She underwent a double mastectomy, and Allen continued supporting her through treatment and recovery. Despite the challenges, they maintained a relationship filled with laughter, companionship, and mutual care. Green said she appreciated being able to relax and be herself around him. Allen shared her feelings, explaining that they loved each other and tried to do what was best for one another. Their bond continued to grow over the years, eventually leading them to take the next step.

The proposal came on March 27, 2021, during Green’s 73rd birthday celebration. When they discussed how she wanted to celebrate, she told Allen to “wow” her. He responded by getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him. After catching her by surprise, he asked, “Are you wowed now?” She happily accepted. The couple exchanged vows on July 16, 2021, after several bridal showers. Her niece did her hair and makeup, and she wore a robe embroidered with the word “bride.” One of her favorite moments was walking down the aisle with her brothers and seeing Allen waiting for her.

Green said she had no regrets about marrying later in life. She believed the years she spent building her career, spending time with her nieces and nephews, and learning to appreciate herself were valuable. She also felt she received the wedding experience she had always wanted, regardless of her age. Allen agreed that they might have enjoyed a good marriage if they had wed earlier, but he was grateful for the time they shared. The couple hoped their story would encourage other people in their 60s and 70s to pursue meaningful relationships rather than believe they had missed their opportunity for love. Allen encouraged older adults to take that chance, reminding them that they did not have to spend their later years alone.
