Beija Flor Travel Inc., a Newly Launched Black-Owned Birding Tour Company Takes Off

NationwideBeija Flor Travel, Inc., a Black-owned tour company, is redefining the birding industry with the launch of multi-day tours designed specifically with beginner, casual, and enthusiastic African American birders in mind. More than the typical birding tour itinerary, Beija Flor Travel blends awe-inspiring birding expeditions with rich cultural experiences that foster deep connections across the African Diaspora.According to the latest edition of Birding in the United States: A Demographic & Economic Analysis by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, there are over 9.3 million Black birders in the United States. This indicator certainly highlights a strong interest in this pastime among this demographic group and it is Beija Flor Travel’s objective to fill the gap in the current marketplace. The Company is building on the work of pioneers in the Black birding community by offering thoughtfully curated birding adventures that go beyond spotting rare bird species to immerse travelers in the culture, history, and people of each destination.

There is a palpable excitement about the prospect of inviting Black birders in particular to participate in these multi-day birding tours. As Judith Mirembe, the lead Birding Guide for an upcoming trip to Uganda, stated: “We are thrilled to welcome visitors from Beija Flor to experience the unique blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and hospitable people that make Uganda truly special.”

About
Beija Flor Travel is a Black-owned tour company founded by Rashida Sykes. She named the Company “Beija Flor” which is Portuguese for “hummingbird” and translates to “kisses the flower.” Rashida went on her first international birding tour in Kenya in 2019 and launched the Company to combine her love for travel with her interest in birding. Prior to launching each trip, Rashida personally vets each destination in person and meets with expert local birding guides, as well as other suppliers to ensure each itinerary reflects her vision.
