Black Mom Successfully Stops Thief from Stealing Packages from Her Neighbor’s Porch

Bernadette Williams

Nationwide — Bernadette Williams, an African American mom from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, stopped a porch pirate with $7 and a gesture of kindness, turning a tense moment into compassion. Her quick action prevented theft while offering understanding instead of anger.

On March 6, Williams noticed a woman trying to steal a package from her neighbor’s porch. Rather than reacting with anger, she chose empathy and acted instinctively to de-escalate the situation.

According to WIS TV, doorbell camera footage captured Williams calling out, “Put that down,” before offering the woman the $7 she had on hand. She wanted to offer help rather than make the situation worse.

“I said, ‘She’s in trouble. How can I make a bad situation better?’ You have to be a part of the solution,” Williams explained. She also encouraged the woman, telling her, “Get some help. You’re better than that. I love you. God loves you.”

The woman appeared remorseful, apologizing and thanking Williams. “Her eyes of ‘I’m sorry.’ That was in her heart,” Williams said. She hopes her actions inspire not only the woman but also others in the community to respond with care.

A longtime neighborhood resident, Williams said her response reflected her sense of responsibility to her community. “We are a part of this community, and we can make our community better,” she said. She hopes the story spreads a message of understanding and compassion.
