Hundreds of Black Doulas and Birth Workers to Convene at 3rd Annual Doula Conference

Black doulas and birth workers

Nationwide — The SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion Training, LLC (SMC Doulas) proudly presents the 3rd SMC Doula Conference, a groundbreaking event designed to uplift, educate, and empower birth workers across the nation. Taking place at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton in Portland, Oregon on September 5-7, 2025, this gathering will convene doulas, midwives, maternal health professionals, parents, and policymakers in a shared mission to transform birth outcomes and protect the legacy of Black and Indigenous birth traditions.

Why This Matters:

In a time when Black and Indigenous birthing people face the highest maternal mortality rates, the role of community-centered birth workers is more critical than ever. With 60% of pregnancy-related deaths deemed preventable (CDC), this conference serves as an essential platform for sharing knowledge, building sustainable practices, and reclaiming birth work as a sacred tradition.

Who Will Be There:

Over 100 doulas, birth workers, maternal health advocates, and healthcare professionals will come together to ensure that doulas of color—who remain underrepresented in the industry—gain the skills, leadership tools, and resources needed to thrive.

Powerhouse Lineup of Speakers:

• Jennie Joseph – British-trained midwife, 2022 Time Woman of the Year, and global maternal health advocate. She will deliver the keynote address at the Awards Luncheon, discussing the evolving role of doulas in creating equitable birth outcomes.

• Nicole Deggins, CNM, MSN, MPH – Founder of Sista Midwife Productions and the Mistress of Ceremonies, bringing her signature wit, energy, and expertise to guide attendees through an unforgettable experience.

• Shafia M. Monroe, MPH – Veteran midwife, doula trainer, and cultural historian, delivering the Opening Address, “Autonomy as the Methodology for Critical Thinking to Grow the Doula Industry with the Needs of the Community.”

Conference Highlights: Building a Future Rooted in Justice and Joy

• Interactive Workshops & Panels – Covering business sustainability, community-led birth practices, and advocacy for reproductive justice.

• Friday Awards Luncheon – Honoring leaders who are revolutionizing maternal and infant health.

• Saturday Night Networking Mixer – Music, dancing, and mocktails for a much-needed space of rejuvenation.

• Blessing of the Hands Ceremony – Celebrating new SMC Doula graduates with an ancient ritual of honoring their work.

• Green Space Meetups – Outdoor sessions designed to foster deep connection and healing.

Early Bird Registration ends March 9, 2025. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a movement that is shifting the narrative around birth work and reproductive justice.
