The Black Girl Healing Project Takes “Therapy Is a Flex” on a Five-City Tour, Providing Free Therapy and Mental Health Resources to Black Girls and Families

Nationwide — The Black Girl Healing Project, a 501 (c)(3), recently completed a five-city “Therapy Is a Flex” Tour, bringing mental health education, healing resources, and interactive experiences to Black girls and caregivers in Philadelphia, Woodbridge/Manassas, Richmond, Baltimore, and Washington, DC.

At the center of the tour was the Therapy Is a Flex Healing Zone, a colorful pop-up tent designed to create a fun, welcoming, and affirming environment where Black girls can feel seen, heard, valued, and supported. The Healing Zone was filled with positive affirmations, tasty treats, pink fluffy pillows, a selfie station, guided activities, and offered opportunities for girls to talk about their feelings and learn healthy ways to cope with stress and conflict.

More than 600 guided journals, affirmation cards, coping-skills magnets, and other healing resources were distributed throughout the tour. The message was simple but solid: “Fighting is not our flex. Lashing out is not our flex. Healing is our flex. Therapy is our flex.”

While engaging with the girls, The Black Girl Healing Project also connected with their caregivers. More than 45 caregivers enrolled in the organization’s Free Therapy for Black Women program, and costs for essential mental health prescriptions were covered for 5 underinsured mothers. Caregivers also gained access to the organization’s digital mental health platform, https://theblackgirlsguidetohealingemotionalwounds.com/

This robust platform provides a wide range of culturally relevant resources addressing topics including anxiety, depression, postpartum mental health, childhood neglect, rejection wounds, conflict resolution, emotional healing, and self-care. The platform is supported by Rashida, an AI-powered wellness chatbot designed to help users identify and navigate relevant resources.

The Black Girl Healing Project was birthed from the best-selling book The Black Girl’s Guide to Healing Emotional Wounds and has grown into a broader movement focused on helping Black women and girls address emotional wounds, access support, and build healthier lives and families.

“The Healing Zone gives girls permission to express themselves and to understand that their emotions matter,” said Nijiama Smalls, Founder and Executive Director of The Black Girl Healing Project. “At the same time, we are reaching their mothers and caregivers because when mothers have the opportunity to heal and receive support, it can positively impact the entire family.”

The goal of the five-city tour was not simply to provide information, but to make mental health conversations approachable, reduce stigma, and connect families to resources before they reach a crisis point. Girls enjoyed the interactive experience, while caregivers expressed gratitude for having access to resources and support that are often difficult to find.

The Black Girl Healing Project remains committed to its mission of moving Black women and girls from crisis to excellence by bringing healing, mental health education, therapy access, and culturally responsive resources directly into the community.
