Black Pastor Distributes 40,000 Eggs to Families in Chicago Struggling With Rising Food Costs

Pastor Charlie Dates distribute eggs

Nationwide — Pastor Charlie Dates is stepping up to support Chicago families struggling with rising grocery costs. He has led the distribution of 40,000 eggs across the city to provide immediate relief instead of waiting for government help.

“The President promised prices would drop on day one, but instead, they’ve only soared. We’re not waiting on him or anyone else to fix this,” Pastor Dates told the Chicago Defender. “The Black church has always stood in the gap for Black families, ensuring they have what they need to thrive. We did it before, and we’re doing it now.”

The giveaway comes as egg prices remain high, partly due to the ongoing bird flu crisis, making it harder for many households to afford basic groceries. Pastor Dates hopes this effort will provide much-needed relief to those struggling with increased food costs.

Before the distribution, volunteers gathered at the House of Hope in Chicago on March 14 to sort and prepare the eggs. They worked in shifts from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the event open for live coverage.

Pastor Dates has a long history of serving the community. In 2011, he became the youngest senior pastor of at his church, leading efforts to support Black families. In 2023, he also took on leadership at another church, continuing his mission of community service.
