Black Women Still Troubled by 2014 Taylor Swift Video — “Do You Really Have to Act Black to Twerk?”

Nationwide — The video is more than one year old, but the issue has never really died when superstar music icon Taylor Swift was seen ‘twerking’ and dressed up like an African American woman in her 2014 video for “Shake It Off.” A video discussion of it on Huffington Post still is very popular, and still getting tons of daily views.During the discussion, Amanda Seales of Huffpost Live, comments, “I think its problematic when ‘twerking’ is contextualized as a ‘black thing’.” She adds, “[In the video], I think she looks stupid… she’s like ‘Look, I’m in my black costume now so let me try to shake my [butt].'”

Twerking is described as a type of dancing in which an individual, usually a female, dances to music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low squatting stance. It started among mostly African Americans, but became more universal when mainstream white performers like Tayor Swift and even Miley Cyrus started doing.
