Nationwide — Brent Davis, a 38-year-old African American man from Atlanta, Georgia, tragically died after his car got stuck on railroad tracks, and he tried to save a passenger before a train hit. His father heard from him moments earlier, but Brent never got the chance to finish the call.
Authorities said the crash happened early on February 10 at E. Ponce De Leon Avenue and N. Clarendon Avenue in DeKalb County. A CSX train collided with Brent’s car while he was helping the female passenger get out, according to People.
Just minutes before the collision, Brent had called his father, Stanley Davis. “He told me his car had broken down on the train tracks,” Stanley said. But before he could say more, Brent told him, “Dad, let me call you back.” That was the last time Stanley heard from his son.
Authorities confirmed Brent was the driver and said he died trying to protect the passenger. The woman survived but remains in critical condition. Police said Brent’s actions showed he was helping someone else escape before the train arrived.
Family members described Brent as selfless and protective. His sister, Brandy Davis, said he always made sure everyone in the family was safe. “He died doing what he always did best — protecting someone he cared about,” she said.
The family has started a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs. It has so far raised over $5,000.
Brent’s father said his son’s actions reflected who he was. “This is something I know he would’ve did for anyone,” Stanley said. His loss has left a deep void for the family, who continue to mourn the sudden tragedy.
CSX offered condolences to those affected and said it is cooperating with authorities. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
