Brian McKnight Sues Radio Station for Calling Him an Abusive and Neglectful Dad

Nationwide — Brian McKnight is taking legal action against a North Carolina radio station and its host, claiming they falsely painted him as an abusive and neglectful father. He says the coverage, shared widely online, harmed his reputation and ignored his side of the story.

The R&B singer filed the lawsuit against Foxy 107.1, its owner Urban One, and host Karen Clark. According to All HipHop, he alleges defamation and reckless reporting, seeking over $25,000 in damages per claim, along with punitive compensation. The suit centers on a January 23, 2025, interview with his ex‑wife, Julie McKnight, which aired on the station and was posted on YouTube.

During the segment, Julie repeated claims that Brian was emotionally abusive and neglectful, including accusations that their children were forced to leave the house as toddlers. McKnight says Clark didn’t remain neutral, instead validating Julie’s narrative with her questions and comments, turning the interview into a “tag‑team attack” on his character.

The lawsuit also targets Urban One’s nationally syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show. A December 2025 podcast used a clip of McKnight’s eldest son saying Brian withheld love from Niko, their son who was battling cancer. McKnight says the clip was edited to mislead viewers, aired without context, and framed him as cold and unfit.

McKnight claims Urban One ignored multiple requests to stop spreading false stories. He calls their behavior a “pattern of reckless disregard for the truth.” The case adds another layer to a long-running family feud, with past social media posts and interviews from his older children accusing him of abandonment. McKnight maintains that those accounts misrepresent the full story.
