Nationwide — The Miss Universe Zimbabwe Competition was recently held for the first time in 22 years this past week, but a 21-year-old white woman was declared the winner of the crown. Her name is Brooke-Bruk Jackson, and while it it true that she was born and raised in Zimbabwe, her victory has sparked controversy and mixed reactions.
“I’m not supporting this at all and I’m not here to argue with [anybody]. Black people should learn to love and respect themselves stop sending a white girl to represent Zimbabwe,” said another user on Instagram.
Miss Universe Zimbabwe is the official preliminary that selects a representative to the Miss Universe pageant. The contestants represent the 10 provinces of the nation of Zimbabwe including all Zimbabwean nationals living in the diaspora.
According to its web site, the vision of Miss Universe Zimbabwe is to build potential and capacity for young women. The web site also states that is a platform to empower young women to be the voice of the voiceless, share issues of concern and enhance women’s skills in community development and empowerment through humanitarian service.
It’s founder and director, Tendai Hunda, took part in Miss intercontinental in 2015 in Magdeburg, Germany where she placed fifth and crowned miss intercontinental Africa. She also runs one of the country’s leading modeling agencies named Hundah.
