Atlanta Entrepreneur Relaunches Iconic Image Celebrating Natural Hair

‘Lock Into Your Heritage’ gained popularity through regular appearances on the production sets of the sitcoms, ‘Living Single’ and ‘Cosby’.

Nationwide — Entrepreneur and collection creator, Candice L. Williams, is relaunching an iconic image with a new and exciting collection of t-shirts celebrating natural hair and promoting Black culture. The iconic image of the Lock Into Your Heritage poster was conceptualized by Williams in 1995. The artwork illustrates an African American woman with her back to the camera, uplifting a cascade of beautiful naturally groomed hair and the caption “Lock Into Your Heritage”. This powerful message and visual resonated with the Black community and gained popularity on popular sitcoms, Living Single and Cosby.

At the time, the image served as a statement and symbol for the African Americans who were beginning to embrace the emerging natural hair movement. Speaking about her motivation for designing the Lock Into Your Heritage image, Williams said: “I wanted to encourage people to go natural and wear locs. The poster landed on two hit television shows that featured characters who wore their hair in locs… and that for me was ground-breaking.”

Fast forward 25 years later, Lock into Your Heritage is as relevant today as it was when first created. Its resurgence is primed to further encourage a fresh wave of cultural awareness with a new generation.

Asked why she is relaunching the iconic image now, Williams explained: “With the emergence of The CROWN Act, it’s the perfect time to share this message and amplify the universal freedom to embrace our culture, showcase our natural hair; to look and feel beautiful in all that we do — naturally.”

In addition to the new T-shirt collection, the Lock into Your Heritage image is available on vintage gift bags, 3-D canvas posters, and a magnet puzzle collection.
