She Arrived in the U.S. from Zimbabwe With $400 and a Suitcase, But Now Owns a Fashion Brand That Redefines Confidence for Women

Nationwide — Chipo Hwami arrived in the United States from Zimbabwe with $400, one suitcase, and an unshakable belief that her life could evolve beyond survival. What followed was not an overnight success story, but years of resilience, intentional growth, and quiet determination that would eventually give rise to a fashion brand centered on confidence, culture, and purpose.

Chipo, now the Founder and CEO of Panashe Designs – a Black-owned fashion label built on the belief that confidence is cultivated, not inherited.

After arriving in the U.S., Chipo learned early that life does not always pan out as planned. In her early years, she worked as a housemaid in Chicago while quietly planning her future in fashion. As a former Black single mother, she navigated seasons of instability while carrying the responsibility of motherhood and the weight of starting over.

Those experiences shaped not only her resilience, but also her understanding of identity, self-perception, and confidence – insights that now define both her designs and the work she does with women.

Today, Chipo uses fashion as a language of empowerment, teaching women how color, clothing, and intentional style influence confidence, presence, and self-image.

At the core of Panashe Designs is the belief that fashion is not just aesthetic-it is psychological.

Through her work, Chipo helps women understand how color, fabric patterns, and textures impact mood and confidence, why what we wear shapes how we see ourselves before the world sees us, and how intentional style can shift mindset, posture, and presence. She teaches that confidence is not a personality trait, but a practice-and that body positivity begins with dressing for your shape, not against it.

To further empower women with these insights, Chipo will host a free educational webinar designed to break down the connection between fashion, psychology, and confidence.
