Nationwide — Chyna Hickman, a 23-year-old African American woman from Mobile, Alabama, was shot and killed while pregnant after an alleged dispute with a customer over a lash service. Police said the disagreement may have involved a $15 payment.
Authorities arrested Kanedrea Davis on Saturday in connection with Hickman’s death following the shooting on Anders Drive. The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office later upgraded Davis’s charge to capital murder, and a judge denied her bond during a hearing.
According to Fox 10 TV, police said Davis was Hickman’s customer and that the two had a disagreement involving lashes or related services. Investigators have not confirmed what exactly led to the shooting, but Hickman’s family believes the argument started over $15.
“It’s crazy, like fifteen dollars?” Hickman’s mother, Chastity Bell, said while mourning her daughter. Bell said the loss has been devastating, especially because Hickman was pregnant at the time of her death and her family also lost her unborn grandchild.
Hickman’s sister, Tierra McCants, said her sister was a lash technician who built her business from home. She said Hickman left her job after finding out she was pregnant and returned to doing lashes, a passion she had developed years earlier.
Hundreds of family members and friends gathered Monday for a candlelight vigil to honor Hickman and remember her life. Loved ones described her as a caring mother who always prioritized her family.
McCants said the family will continue seeking accountability as the case moves forward. “I don’t want my niece and nephew to grow up in a world and think that there wasn’t justice for their mom,” she said.
Hickman’s brother, Jaylon Hickman, said, “Before the entrepreneur Chyna, it was the mother. She was a great mother. She loved her kids. This should be something that changes something, not just another story about somebody’s life being taken to senseless gun violence because she was so much more.”
