Nationwide — Damarion Jones, a 16-year-old African American boy from New York, accidentally shot and killed his 13-year-old best friend Jonah Tanner inside their home. Moments later, Jones took his own life out of guilt.
The shooting happened Wednesday night inside a residence on Lincoln Avenue in Syracuse, where the two teens were spending time together. Investigators said Damarion Jones handled a 9 mm handgun when it accidentally discharged inside the home, according to the New York Post.
Officials said Jones immediately reacted after the shot was fired. Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said Jones appeared overwhelmed by guilt in the moments that followed.
Authorities said Jones then turned the gun on himself. He died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after the incident.
Jonah Tanner suffered critical injuries and emergency responders rushed him to the hospital. Doctors later confirmed he had become brain dead despite medical efforts to save him.
Investigators have not released details on how the teens accessed the firearm or what led up to the shooting. The case remains under review as officials continue gathering information.
Families of both boys described them as extremely close and “inseparable,” saying their bond felt like brotherhood. Both families are now preparing to lay the teens to rest together after the same tragic night.
Jones’ mother, Kiesha Brown Jones, described her son as a kind and loving teenager who brought joy to those around him. She said he was her only son and was deeply cherished by the family.
A vigil held on Sunday brought relatives and friends together to honor both boys. During the gathering, Jones’ mother shared that her son’s final words to her were “I love you,” a moment she now holds onto as their last goodbye.
