Nationwide — Dante Lee and his daughter, Kiyah, are making history as the first-ever Black father and daughter duo on a mission to help at least 1,000 African American families become homeowners within the next 12 months. They have launched a Black-owned lending firm called BlackHomeownership.com to easily and quickly pre-qualify underprivileged families to get home loans that would ordinarily be denied to them.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only about 44% of African American households own their homes compared to almost 80% of White households who own their homes. These figures highlight a significant disparity in homeownership rates and this gap has persisted over time, reflecting broader systemic issues, including access to credit, discrimination, and economic inequality.
Dante comments, “My daughter and I are not discriminating. We are very much willing to help all families who wish to become homeowners regardless of their race. However, our priority is to help Black and Brown families because of how wide the homeownership gap is and has been for decades.”
Dante says that as homeowners themselves, they understand that homeownership is one of the first steps to be taken to increase wealth in African American and other urban communities.
He and Kiyah are also the first father-daughter duo to launch what they are calling the Affordable Housing Network, an online database that features tens of thousands of homes across the country that are below market value. This site is designed to help, not just aspiring homeowners, but also real estate investors to find and discover the right property for their needs. Every day, nearly 500 new properties are added and many of the homes listed are foreclosed properties that are selling for $150,000 to $250,000 or less.
