Black Army Veteran Who Taught Himself How to Code Selected as National Speaker at 126th National Business League Conference

Nationwide — Darren L. Buckner didn’t come from money and didn’t come from connections. He came from North St. Louis, and he came correct. Buckner, a U.S. Army veteran, spent seven months building Portal HomeHub, a real estate platform designed for the Global South, working alone with AI as his only development team. Total cost: roughly $200 a month. No co-founder. No development agency. No venture capital. “It was chaos,” Buckner said, describing those early months. “But chaos you control is just work nobody’s done yet.”

Portal HomeHub has secured 51 country-specific domains across the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and Asia, laying the groundwork for a real estate infrastructure built specifically for markets the major platforms have ignored. The first market to go live is Guyana, where the platform launched with more than 50 verified real estate agents and over 200 active listings, and is growing weekly. The Dominican Republic is next, followed by Colombia.

Buckner is actively seeking agents, brokers, and partners across the Caribbean as Portal HomeHub expands into new markets. “If you’re building something in your country and you want to be part of this,” Buckner said, “reach out. We’re growing this together.” Partnership information is available at portalhomehub.com.

Buckner calls it building for “the next billion homeowners,” buyers and sellers across the Global South who have been underserved by outdated listing systems and unlicensed agent networks. “Your listings deserve better,” he said. “They deserve better. And somebody had to build it.”

The idea started at home. His wife, Rochelle Pydana Buckner, is Guyanese; her late father, Milton Pydana, was a celebrated West Indies cricketer. That family connection is why Guyana became the platform’s first live market, not a side note to the business, but the reason it exists. Buckner and Rochelle also co-founded PivotPoint AI, an AI strategy venture, together.

Before Portal HomeHub, Buckner spent years building and rebuilding across construction, wholesale, and retail ventures, learning the same lesson each time: find the gap nobody else is building for, and go build it. That instinct is what led him to a market most U.S. tech companies have never seriously looked at.

His work has earned him national recognition. He was recently selected as a National Speaker for the 126th National Business League Conference, chosen from 643 applicants and confirmed by Dr. Kenneth L. Harris, President and CEO of the National Business League, the organization founded in 1900 by Booker T. Washington. Buckner has also been named a Featured Speaker for Project 2035, the National Economic Sovereignty Think Tank.
