Nationwide — Meet DJ Lee, the 15-year-old founder and CEO of Socially Conscious Apparel, the fastest-growing Black-owned line of hoodies and t-shirts that pay homage to Black Panther, Kyrie Irving, and more. Based in San Diego, California, his apparel collection also features messages that address various social injustice issues that affect people of color. For example, to address police brutality he has shirts with hard-hitting, cold-chilling messages such as “Stop Killing Us” and “Don’t Shoot”. His fashion items are for both men and women and are made from a very high-quality blend of polyester and cotton.Lee, who is a 10th-grader in high school, says that he launched the business to provide a powerful platform in the world of fashion for today’s social climate. He comments, “The idea is to be able to express yourself without having to say anything. Everyone who sees you in my clothes will immediately know how woke you are. I want my supporters to be able to wear their awareness.”
Lee’s collection touches on controversial subjects such as the recent breakup of Kanye West and Adidas as well as the recent NBA suspension of Kyrie Irving. It also includes shirts that celebrate HBCU graduates. In addition, his customers will find clothing that pay tribute to the already successful $600 million dollar Black Panther: Wakanda Forever film. Even more, there are shirts that encourage African Americans and others to see themselves as kings and queens.
Lee adds, “Although my shirts have strong messages, they are not political viewpoints nor is it my goal to influence the political opinions of others. My only goal is to inspire and empower.”
