18-Year-Old Black Teen Survives House Explosion, But Suffers Severe Burns on 85% of His Body

Nationwide — Dontea Anthony Jr., an 18-year-old African American teen from Florissant, Missouri, survived a house explosion in north St. Louis County that left him with burns over most of his body. He escaped through flames and remains in critical condition.

Anthony was in the basement when the blast struck Monday morning, according to KSDK. He was the only one inside. His twin brother had just started college on a track scholarship, while his mother was jogging and his father was at work.

The explosion forced Anthony to climb through fire to get out. His family said he suffered burns on 85% of his body before being rushed to emergency care.

Investigators believe natural gas likely caused the blast, but stressed the case is still under review. Police confirmed no foul play was involved. Utility provider Spire later reported no issues in its system and said it had received no complaints of gas odors or digging in the area.

The explosion sparked fires that spread across Evan Aire Drive, damaging or destroying more than 20 homes. Fire crews battled flames at five houses while nearby residents were ordered to evacuate until engineers could inspect the buildings.

Anthony had recently graduated from Hazelwood Central High School. His aunt launched a GoFundMe to help the family rebuild and cover medical costs. She wrote that he faces “a very challenging road ahead.” It has so far raised nearly $50,000.

St. Louis County officials and Spire said they are continuing the investigation. Spire added, “We take our responsibility for safety very seriously and we’re committed to keeping our customers, employees, and communities safe.”
