Black Educator From Texas Brings Social-Emotional Learning to Schools With New Children’s Book

Nationwide — Dr. Kenshara Cravens-Knoxson, PhD in Social Work, professor, licensed social worker, educator, nonprofit founder, speaker, and children’s author, is now booking school visits featuring book readings and age-appropriate Social-Emotional (SEL) conversations centered around her new children’s book, Craving for a Change at New Horizons Academy. Her book follows a diverse group of elementary students as they manage everyday situations at school, involving friendship, self-control, empathy, confidence, and responsible decision-making.

Through enthralling storytelling and colorful illustrations, children learn practical lessons that encourage social-emotional learning (SEL) both inside and outside the classroom. It functions as a valuable resource for parents, caregivers, teachers, school counselors, therapists, social workers, and youth-serving organizations searching for meaningful ways to foster emotional intelligence and positive character development. She comments, “Every child experiences periods of doubt and frustration. My hope is that this book, coupled with intentional SEL conversations, will help children recognize that their feelings matter, their choices matter, and they have the ability to grow through challenges.”

Built around the five core competencies of Social-Emotional Learning, the book helps children develop:

• Self-awareness
• Self-management
• Social awareness
• Relationship skills
• Responsible decision-making

Ideal for classroom read-alouds, as a tool to support SEL-focused instruction, counseling sessions, homeschool instruction, youth programs, and family reading time, the book also includes reflection activities and conversation prompts that encourage children to apply each lesson to their own lives.

Dr. Cravens-Knoxson is the founder of the Craving for a Change Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enabling children, youth, and families through education, mentoring, advocacy, and social-emotional development. Based on her professional experience working with children and families, she created this book to provide young readers with lifelong skills that promote resilience, empathy, confidence, and healthy decision-making.
