Meet the First Black Woman to Open a Kids’ Skating Rink in Lancaster, California

Nationwide — After more than 40 years of working with children, entrepreneur Duana Garrett is making history in Lancaster, California, as the first Black woman to open a children’s skating rink in the city. Her new venture, Wheels of Fun, was created specifically for children ages 5 to 12, including kids with special needs and sensory needs, providing families with a safe and welcoming place where young people can have fun, socialize, and stay physically active.

Garrett’s inspiration to open her skating rink grew directly from her decades of serving young people. Over the years, she noticed that many young people in the community had limited recreational options designed specifically for their age group. Some had never even experienced the joy of roller skating. Rather than simply recognizing the need, Garrett decided to do something about it, transforming her vision into a family-centered destination designed with children in mind.

Wheels of Fun will officially celebrate its Grand Opening on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 11am to 6:30pm at 44830 Valley Central Way, Suite 108, in Lancaster. The opening represents more than the launch of a new local business; it marks a historic entrepreneurial achievement for Garrett and the creation of a new recreational resource for families throughout the community.

At the heart of Garrett’s mission is a desire to encourage children to spend less time in front of screens and more time being active and connecting with one another. Wheels of Fun combines the timeless excitement of roller skating with exercise, confidence-building, social interaction, and opportunities for children to develop new skills. Garrett hopes the rink will become a place where children can make friends, create memories, and experience the simple joy of being kids.

The colorful new facility features signature bright-orange roller skates and an energetic, kid-friendly atmosphere. The Grand Opening celebration will include children learning to skate, families experiencing the facility for the first time, music, food, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Media will also have opportunities to interview Garrett, parents, and community guests while capturing colorful photos and video throughout the venue.

For Garrett, it is the culmination of decades devoted to children and a new chapter in her commitment to the Lancaster community. By becoming the first Black woman to open a kids’ skating rink in the city, she is not only breaking new ground as an entrepreneur but also creating a space intended to positively impact generations of local children and families.
