71-Year-Old Black Grandpa From Florida Found Dead in Nursing Home Closet, Family Seeks Answers

Nationwide — The family of 71-year-old Elin Etienne, an African American father and grandfather from North Miami, Florida, is demanding answers after a tragic incident at a local nursing facility. Etienne, who had been recovering from a brain aneurysm, was admitted to the North Dade Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on August 14. However, a week later, his family received a phone call from the facility, informing them that Etienne had disappeared. Days later, the situation took a devastating turn when his body was reportedly discovered in a storage closet at the same facility.According to People, the family says that the nursing home initially claimed that Etienne had “checked himself out” of the facility. When the family requested verification of his signature, the facility allegedly refused, prompting them to file a missing person’s report. Concerned for his well-being, the North Miami Police Department issued a “missing vulnerable adult” alert on August 23, stating that Etienne had last been seen the previous day near the nursing home, wearing a green shirt and blue shorts.

Tragically, on September 2, the family was notified of Etienne’s death. His niece, Kimberly Etienne, expressed the shock and heartbreak of the family, recounting how a detective informed them that Elin’s body had been found in a storage closet, badly decomposed. The news left the family devastated, especially since they had believed he was missing, not deceased within the very facility entrusted with his care. “We never expected him to be dead in the nursing home,” said his granddaughter, Ruth Keisha Etienne.

Etienne’s death has raised serious concerns about the safety and treatment of elderly individuals in nursing homes. Cases of neglect and abuse in such facilities are unfortunately not uncommon, as vulnerable seniors are often at risk of mistreatment. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing issue of elderly abuse in nursing homes, where understaffing, lack of oversight, and improper care can lead to fatal consequences.

In response to the incident, the North Dade Nursing and Rehabilitation Center issued a statement expressing their condolences to the family. The facility stated that it was cooperating with authorities and committed to continuing the high-quality care their residents expect. However, the statement did little to ease the pain and frustration of Etienne’s family, who are now left grieving and seeking accountability for the preventable death of their loved one.

Elin Etienne was remembered by his family as a kind-hearted and humorous man who brought joy to those around him. Once a chef, he was described as loving and selfless, always able to light up a room with his jokes and laughter. His family now faces the difficult task of planning his funeral while searching for answers to how such a tragedy could occur under the care of a professional facility.
