Black Female Student from Memphis Making History as a Rhodes Scholarship Finalist

Nationwide — Elyse Warren, an African American college student from Memphis, Tennessee, has been named a Rhodes Scholarship finalist, recognized for her academic excellence and leadership as she prepares to graduate from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi.

Warren is a senior double-majoring in mathematics and neuroscience, with minors in chemistry and psychology. The college praised her achievement, describing it as a testament to both her talent and the school’s personalized, high-impact education.

Warren credited her professors and mentors for supporting her through the competitive Rhodes application process. She said the college organized mock interviews and practice sessions to help her prepare for the final selection stage.

“These experiences have shaped my goals and helped me grow as a thinker and a leader,” Warren said, according to WREG. “Millsaps has taught me that leadership starts with listening, and that service is what fulfills me.”

The Rhodes Scholarship, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious academic honors, offers full postgraduate funding at the University of Oxford in England. More than 100 scholars are chosen each year from around the globe based on intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service.

Warren said she stays motivated by believing in herself and staying focused on her goals. “Cultivate self-belief. Don’t let fear linger. And remember, as Kobe Bryant said, ‘Job’s not finished.’ That mindset keeps me going.”

Final interviews for the Rhodes Scholarship will take place in November, with winners announced shortly after.
