69-Year-Old Black Mom Allegedly Killed By Her Son Who Struck Her With a Hammer

Nationwide — Jarell Joseph, a 35-year-old man from Harris County, Texas, has been charged with murder after allegedly killing his 69-year-old mother, Eva Peavy, with a hammer in their home. Deputies found Joseph holding the weapon when they arrived.

According to WLBT, Eva’s stepson discovered her unresponsive in the garage on Wednesday night and called 911. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe the hammer was used in the fatal attack, though details about her injuries have not been released.

Eva’s husband, Curtis Peavy, was at a bowling alley when he received a call from his biological son. Curtis recalled, “He said, ‘Dad, you need to come home real quick. Jarell just did something to Mama Eva…’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘Got here. I just saw a body laying in the garage.'”

Joseph, who has bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, had a history of violence. He was charged with assaulting his mother in 2016.

“I saw the change in him. His whole mindset started changing, his demeanor and everything and so forth,” Curtis Peavy said.

Jarell Joseph is being held in the Harris County Jail on a $300,000 bond and is scheduled for a court appearance on Monday.
