Family Identifies Black Man Killed in Atlanta After Tree Fell on His Home During Storms

Edward Johnson

Nationwide — Edward Johnson, an African American man in his 60s from Atlanta, Georgia, tragically died when a large tree fell on his home during severe storms in the Grove Park neighborhood. Emergency respondents arrived quickly but found him trapped and unresponsive.

The incident happened just before 5 a.m. on Sunday as strong storms hit the Westside of Atlanta. Capt. Scott Powell of Atlanta Fire said the tree was extremely large and fell on the corner of the house on Matilda Place NW. Johnson’s wife later identified him.

Johnson’s wife, who has been married to him for 21 years, described him as “a very good man,” according to 11Alive.

The Atlanta Fire Rescue team responded within 7 minutes and launched a rescue operation but could not save him. There were others in the home at the time, but no one else was injured.

Neighbor Reid Morton expressed shock, recalling the Johnson family as “really nice people.” He added how unpredictable the incident was, saying, “It really puts into perspective that anything can happen.”

Johnson’s daughter set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses, sharing that her father was a “loving husband and father.” It has so far raised over $500.
