Nationwide — TLC group member Chilli is under public scrutiny after reports linked her to political donations and resurfaced social media activity, sparking debate among fans about her personal choices and relationship with actor Matthew Lawrence. The situation has led to wider criticism and divided reactions online.
Federal election records show that Chilli, born Rozonda Thomas, contributed nearly $900 to political committees linked to Donald Trump during the 2024 cycle. Additional smaller donations were made to the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
Around the same period, she also briefly reshared a debunked claim involving Michelle Obama, which remained visible for more than a day before being removed.
Chilli addressed the issue on March 28, clarifying that she is not MAGA and that the repost was accidental. “I made a mistake too many make: I did not read the fine print. I thought I was supporting causes against human trafficking and for veterans,” she explained on Instagram. She also said she respects Michelle Obama and noted her past support for Barack Obama’s campaigns and related initiatives.
Fans quickly reacted online with shock and criticism, questioning both her political activity and her social media judgment. According to Atlanta Black Star, some tied the discussion to her relationship with Matthew Lawrence, suggesting it influenced her views and sparked comments that she was “thinking white,” which intensified the online debate.
The controversy also brought back earlier discussions about colorism after Chilli corrected how fans described her skin tone, saying she prefers “caramel” instead of “chocolate.” Critics interpreted this as distancing herself from darker skin identity, adding another layer to ongoing conversations about her public image. These issues have left TLC fans divided at a time when the group is preparing for a co-headlining tour with Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue.
Some supporters have even said they may skip the upcoming shows due to the backlash. At the same time, bandmate T-Boz has also faced past scrutiny over political associations, highlighting how closely public attention continues to follow members of TLC.
