The Philadelphia comedy club that helped nurture Kevin Hart’s early career continues its legacy of discovering talent through the Welcome to the Fellowship Challenge
Nationwide — Before Kevin Hart became one of the world’s most recognizable entertainers, The Laff House was among the Philadelphia stages where he developed his stand-up comedy career. Now, the club’s founder, Roderick “Mr. Rod” Millwood, is continuing The Laff House’s tradition of recognizing emerging talent by launching a national search for the next generation of comedians.
The Laff House Presents: Welcome to the Fellowship Challenge is a national stand-up comedy competition created to identify talented performers who can make audiences laugh while remaining true to their faith and values. Hosted by Philadelphia native Rob Minor, known as “The Minister of Comedy,” the competition will give emerging comedians an opportunity to perform before live audiences, gain exposure and compete for the chance to headline a professionally recorded one-person comedy show at a Laff House location.
“The Laff House has always been about recognizing talent and giving comedians a stage,” said Mr. Rod. “Welcome to the Fellowship continues that mission. We are looking for comedians who have something special to share and are ready for the opportunity to be seen and heard.”
A Philadelphia Comedy Legacy
Founded by Mr. Rod and his late wife, Mona, The Laff House became a pioneering Black-owned comedy club and an important part of Philadelphia’s entertainment history. The original South Street location opened during the 1990s and became known as a place where emerging comedians could develop their craft, connect with audiences and gain valuable stage experience.
Kevin Hart’s connection to the venue was memorialized in the 2006 stand-up release Live Comedy from the Laff House: Kevin Hart. Other nationally recognized performers associated with The Laff House’s legacy include Deon Cole, Mike Epps, and Michael Blackson.
“When people talk about The Laff House, they often mention the famous names who performed there,” Mr. Rod said. “But what I remember is that they were talented people who needed a stage. We believed in creating opportunities before the rest of the world recognized what those comedians could become.” For Mr. Rod, the club represented more than entertainment. It demonstrated the importance of Black ownership, representation, and access to opportunity in the comedy industry. “The Laff House represented a place where talented people could find their voice,” he said. “We created a stage for comedians who deserved to be seen and heard.”
Inspired by Mona’s Belief in the Vision
Welcome to the Fellowship also carries a deeply personal meaning for Mr. Rod. Mona believed in The Laff House from the beginning and helped manage important aspects of the business. Her influence remains part of the brand’s identity and its continuing commitment to bringing people together through laughter. Approximately 15 years ago, Mr. Rod organized a comedy show for Mona and members of her faith community. He wanted to create an entertainment experience that respected their beliefs and values. Watching the audience laugh and enjoy the show revealed an opportunity to bring comedy, community, and faith together.
“That experience planted the seed for Welcome to the Fellowship,” Mr. Rod said. “I saw that people wanted comedy they could enjoy without compromising their values.”
During Mona’s illness, Mr. Rod recorded comedy performances and brought them to her. Watching the shows gave her moments of comfort and genuine joy during a difficult period. “She would laugh so hard that, for those moments, it was as if the illness had been pushed aside,” he recalled. “Seeing her laugh reminded me that joy still matters, even during the hardest seasons of life.”
Her memory continues to influence Mr. Rod’s vision for The Laff House and the purpose behind Welcome to the Fellowship. “Mona was the heart of what we were building,” he said. “Continuing The Laff House legacy and creating new opportunities for comedians is one way of honoring everything she believed it could become.”
A National Platform for Emerging Comedians
The Welcome to the Fellowship Challenge will feature 12 selected contestants competing before a live audience. Performances will be evaluated through a combination of judges’ scores and audience voting. The winning comedian will receive the opportunity to headline a professionally recorded one-person comedy show at a Laff House location. Finalists may also be considered for future touring and performance opportunities.
Applicants do not need national recognition or a large social-media following. The competition is seeking performers with strong comedic ability, an original voice, stage presence, and material that reflects the values of the program.
The deadline to submit an audition video is October 28, 2026.
“We believe the next great comedian may simply need someone willing to provide the stage,” Mr. Rod said. “If you believe you have something special to share, we want to hear from you.”

Welcome to the Fellowship represents the next chapter of The Laff House’s longstanding commitment to discovering, developing, and showcasing comedic talent. The initiative brings together entertainment, opportunity, community and faith while introducing a new generation of audiences and performers to The Laff House brand.
