Nationwide — Gabriel Stainback, an African American police officer from Cornelius, North Carolina, was killed after being struck by a vehicle while biking with his wife in the city of Concord. The 25-year-old newlywed had been with the Cornelius Police Department for less than a year.
Stainback and his wife were riding together Saturday afternoon when the crash happened. Authorities have not confirmed if his wife was injured or if the driver will face charges.
According to My Fox 8, Stainback began his career with the Cornelius Police Department in December 2024 after completing the Basic Law Enforcement Training program. He first joined the department as a cadet and quickly earned the respect of fellow officers.
News of his death spread quickly on social media, where the police department shared condolences. Hundreds of people responded, remembering him as a kind, dedicated officer and friend.
One person wrote, “Gabe was always the nicest guy in every room he walked into.” Another former cadet said, “He had so much knowledge, was great at every practical we done, and a PT stud!”
Friends also shared memories that showed his upbeat and playful nature. College roommate Bryce Foreman recalled, “I would say that everybody he came in contact with was happy to be around him. He really knew how to make your day better.”
Stainback was also a standout track athlete at High Point University. Foreman said becoming a police officer gave him purpose and happiness. “He wanted to do something that fulfilled his life and fulfilled other people.”
The Cornelius Police Department urged the community to keep Stainback’s family in their thoughts as they mourn the loss of a young officer whose career had only just begun.
