Black Mom Shot and Killed Inside Car, But Her Baby in the Back Seat Survived

Nationwide — Gabryel Ayers, a 26-year-old African American mother from Chicago, Illinois, was killed when gunmen opened fire on her car on the city’s South Side. Her 1-year-old daughter in the back seat survived the attack unharmed despite dozens of bullets striking the vehicle.

Police said three men fired at Ayers and her 27-year-old boyfriend while they were inside their car. Investigators believe about 50 shots were fired before the vehicle crashed.

Ayers died at the scene, and her boyfriend was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Their daughter, who was strapped in the back seat, was not hit, according to WLBT.

The shooting prompted a wave of grief and calls for action. A prayer vigil on Friday drew Mayor Brandon Johnson, local officials, and anti-violence advocates, all urging stronger measures against gun violence.

Alderman David Moore highlighted the baby’s survival, “If he didn’t show that he’s still God by protecting that baby, I don’t know what else he can show you.”

Community leaders promised to step up efforts to prevent further violence. Violence interrupter Joshua Coakley said his team would continue patrolling neighborhoods and engaging residents.

Chicago Police held an outdoor roll call at the shooting site, while locals like Demetric Brown, who lost a daughter to gun violence in 2021, called for stricter enforcement against illegal firearms.

Police continue to search for the three suspects. So far, no arrests have been made, and investigators say the case remains active.

Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church, offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. “Don’t be silent. Don’t sit back because if you do, then you are a co-conspirator to everything that they do,” Pfleger said.
