Nationwide — Gina Keller and Steve Brown knew each other as children growing up in Brooklyn, but it took nearly five decades for their connection to become a lasting romance. After building separate lives, raising families, and ending their marriages, they reconnected as adults and discovered they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
Keller was six and Brown was seven when they first met. He often visited her home to play with her brother, and she remembered being drawn to his appearance. “He had this big red afro. I always thought that he was cute,” she recalled. Years later, they briefly tried dating while attending college. Brown enrolled at Long Island University, while Keller attended Syracuse University. However, their relationship did not progress, and they eventually went their separate ways.
Both grew up watching their parents maintain loving marriages, and each later started a family. Brown moved to North Carolina, while Keller married and had a son named Gavin. Their lives followed different paths for years until both marriages ended. Keller left a marriage that lasted a decade, while Brown returned to New York after spending 20 years away. By then, she had begun thinking about what she wanted in a future partner. Two weeks before Brown reached out to her on Facebook, she had written a list of 10 qualities she hoped to find in a relationship. When they reconnected, she realized he had seven or eight of them.
The two began dating in 2014, and their childhood connection developed into a serious relationship. According to Essence, Keller said she initially hesitated to commit because she enjoyed her independence after years of marriage. However, Brown’s gentle nature and calm personality helped change her perspective. She described herself as outgoing and social, while he preferred to listen and consider things before responding. Their different personalities worked well together, and Keller eventually knew she wanted to marry him. She later reflected that holding out for a partner who met every item on her list might have caused her to miss the relationship they built.
Brown eventually proposed after asking Keller’s parents and her son for permission. The couple chose a wedding venue and dress, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to postpone their plans. While waiting to walk down the aisle, they found other ways to share their relationship with others. They launched Car Chronicles, a YouTube channel featuring discussions about relationships, parenting, date nights, and everyday life. They also created myBKlife, a merchandise brand inspired by their Brooklyn roots, Black love, and family. Through both projects, they share their experiences and celebrate the importance of family, including raising a Black son in Brooklyn as he prepares for college.
