Nationwide — Gladys Rampersant, a 75-year-old daycare employee in North Charleston, South Carolina, has been arrested on charges of child cruelty after she reportedly abused a baby at a Christian preschool. She now faces child cruelty charges as the investigation into the case remains ongoing.
According to Live 5 News, the incident happened in July at Sweetgrass Christian Academy on Remount Road. Detectives reported that Rampersant forcefully lifted an infant by the arms, shook the child, and slammed the baby into a crib.
Authorities said Rampersant returned moments later, pulled the baby from the crib, and struck the infant on the head several times. The child involved was less than one year old.
Rampersant was taken into custody on Thursday and booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center. Jail records show she posted a $15,000 bond and was released about five hours later.
Police described the allegations as “disturbing” and confirmed that their investigation continues. Sweetgrass Christian Academy, which opened on July 26 of this year, has since closed and appears to be permanently shut down.
