Nationwide — Gorgeuss McGrew, a 10-year-old African American girl from Jackson, Mississippi, was found safe hours after being reported missing. Police say her biological mother, who does not have custody, is now facing kidnapping charges.
Jackson police said the search began around 7 a.m. on August 14, when McGrew was seen being forced into a vehicle while waiting at a bus stop. Witnesses described the suspect as a woman, later identified as 28-year-old Dessan R. Riley, according to WLBT.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation quickly issued a Missing and Endangered alert, releasing McGrew’s name and description to the public. Authorities said the alert played a role in mobilizing the search.
Riley, who is McGrew’s non-custodial mother, was located and taken into custody. Police confirmed she will be extradited to Jackson to face formal kidnapping charges.
Officials have not released details about where McGrew was found, but confirmed she was unharmed. Authorities are still urging anyone with information about the case to come forward.
