Nationwide — Ice Cube and Nia Long are set to reunite for another Are We There Yet? sequel. The actors return to the franchise as development begins on a new story centered on family life and grandparenthood.
The new installment is titled Are They Gone Yet? and continues the story that began with 2005’s Are We There Yet? and its 2007 sequel Are We Done Yet?. The project revisits the long-running story of Nick Persons and Suzanne Persons more than 20 years later, according to Deadline.
The upcoming film follows Nick and Suzanne as they enter a new stage of life. The story shifts toward grandparenthood and highlights how their family dynamics evolve as they face new generational challenges.
The original film followed Nick, played by Ice Cube, as he tried to win over Suzanne, played by Nia Long, while a road trip with her children, Lindsey and Kevin, turns chaotic. The first film turned into a box office hit and built a long-running family comedy franchise.
Years later, the sequel builds on that foundation and revisits the couple’s relationship in a different phase of life. Nick and Suzanne now navigate the realities of aging, family change, and becoming grandparents, while still dealing with familiar comedic tension within the household.
Nia Long reacted to the reunion on social media, posting, “This should be fun,” a message that quickly circulated among fans of the franchise.
Ice Cube also commented on the project, saying, “We built something special with this franchise. Audiences grew up with Nick Persons, and now Nick’s got grandkids. Time flies. Partnering with Skydance to bring this story to a new generation is exactly the kind of move CubeVision was built for, and I am excited for the new partnership.”
The screenplay is written by Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana. The production team has not named a director yet, and no release date has been announced.
